Professionalism

Professionalism is how a teacher interacts with peers, families and students. Teachers who carry themselves with a level of respect demand respect not only from their peers but also from their students. This standard is important because as a teacher you model good behavior and need to be respected by students and colleagues. Professionalism can be demonstrated through communication with parents, professional memberships, and professional growth.

The ability to communicate clearly to parents is an importance aspect of professionalism. Keeping the parents informed about what is occurring in the classroom helps students with their academic progress. At the beginning of my student teaching experience communicated with the parents seeking permission to document my experience with pictures.  Below is a link to the letter I sent home to parents.

Professionalism is being involved within the community and being aware of what is changing in the education world. Being a member of Virginia Education Association I am knowledgeable of the changing within educations and learning new strategies and resources. I receive monthly newsletters that keep me updated in the ever changing educational field.

Another aspect that has helped form the foundation of my professionalism has been experiences both academic and nonacademic. My prior experiences, such as working at a summer camp and working at an after school program, have both prepared me to confidently enter a classroom as a professional.

Below is my paper on the professionalism standard.
