Instructional planning is the use of a school’s curriculum and pacing guides along with the Virginia Standards of Learning to develop and effective teach the content. Instructional planning is an important standard because without it a teacher will not have a set plan and will deliver a sub-par lesson. A teacher demonstrates this skill through collaborating with colleagues, and finding an organizational method to assist with staying on task.
During my student teaching experience I created a two week unit about symbols, both American and Virginian. I had the privilege of sharing it with the entire grade and really enjoyed watching the students learn and interact during the unit. Below is a link to all nine lesson plans, as well as photos from the unit.

As a way to stay organized and prepared for the week ahead of me, I filled out weekly lesson plan sheets. These sheets allowed me to stay on task and adjust things if necessary. Below is a sample of what a small reading group weekly plan looks like.
In addition, the first grade team would meet weekly to discuss the up coming week. During this time ideas, lessons and worksheets would be shared and discussed. When discussing what to focus on the first grade team referred to the school’s curriculum guide and the Virginia Standards of Learning.
